I've had similiar problems installing debian until I switched base2_2.tgz files. The current file (2.1.99.0-1999-07-20) seems to have these problems with no easy way of solving them. Using a slightly older file http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/disks-powerpc/2.1.8-1999-02-24/b
