Found this post : "partial hang - can ssh in, ps aux hangs part way through"
I am facing a similar issue... may I ask if you found a solution ?
Regards,
matt.

It's this laptop though, so I had to reboot, cannot perform any more tests.
I tried the following, all to no avail:
ps aux
top
(each of those hung part way through the first iteration)
killall /usr/bin/X
killall xinit
sudo telinit 1

using "telnet localhost 143." I've got some ideas about things to play
with, but my problem still isn't solved. Please help if you have any
ideas!

Thanks for the great advice. I'm giving it a shot right now. If it
works I want to post your response on the qmailrocks mailing list and
forum for others. A lot of people seem to be having this problem.

I had similar problems and this is what I did to get it working:
Edited /etc/courier/imapd-ssl making the following changes
IMAPDSSLSTART=NO (it was set to
t up these users and their passwords using VqAdmin.
When I "ps aux | grep imap" I get:
# ps aux |grep imap
root 21439 0.0 0.1 1764 548 ?S02:58 0:00
/usr/sbin/couriertcpd -address=0 -stderrlogger=/usr/sbin/courierlogger
-maxprocs=40 -maxperip=20 -pid=/var/r

t of free memory has been dwindling, even
though an output of ps aux reports a constant (and much lower) memory
usage. This box has 128mb's of ram, so ps aux's output (the sum of %mem *
~128) is only a few megs, while free says I'm using 100megs w/o cache and
such. How does this make sense? F
