reports ttyS01 as a 16550A is a good thing, as that's what happens on my

In any case, check your logs to see what exactly happened. I'd start

How can I tell if a modem is set up properly?
If I insert the card I get the higher pitched beep and a message that ttyS01
is a 16550A. Hmmm - is that good or bad? Does it mean that (when I
eventually get round to using the modem to dial up) everything is OK?
Grateful for any light anyone c

After installing potato, it seems that something is modifying the

The problem is that my serial takes ttyS0 and irda takes ttys1, then the
modem should take ttyS2, and the second problem is that every 5 minutes

I believe pppd is working okay, since if I mimic the modem on my

I'm running Potato on a Toshiba Tecra 700CT. I've compiled a 2.2.12

hello,

glibc2.1) on a laptop, i am using regularly a xircom combo card (CEM-28) as

I have an HP OmniBook 800 running Debian 2.0 and an IBM "Home and

works brilliantly, but the modem doesn't work at all.
A borrowed 3com ethernet/modem combo card worked, so I think the
PCMCIA side of things is set up correctly.

Most manufacturers have them available as spare parts

does anyone have an idea where to [inexpensively] find a used pcmcia
modem cable? I need the kind that has two inline plugs. I've found
that I can get one with a 14.4 modem attached for $20, but this seems a
bit extreme.

My friend's Toshiba laptop has a PCMCIA modem card. When it is dialing
the number, you can't hear it - it doesn't make any sound. I've tried
lots of things like atm1, atm2, checking for interrupt conflicts, but
nothing seems to work. I've even tried borrowing some
