for anyone interested my problems were:
Missing boot.ini - restored from floppy.
Incorrect partition for W2K - whilst Win98 and Linux see the partition
as 10, W2K sees it as 8. Once I changed that in the restored boot.ini, I
was able to boot all 3 OS. eventually worked that out using MAP fr
