I assume your running scsi emulation on hdc. this would change it from
hdc to sr0
ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom
should fix it.

Debian with 2.6.5-kernel (from Knoppix-3.4, distrubution testing?).
The entry in /etc/fstab is:
/dev/dvd /dvd iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
so no entry for /dev/cdrom (?).
1. /dev/dvd is a link to /dev/cdrom
2. no /dev/cdrom entry
3. cdrom is detected as hdc,
