Hello,
I'm trying to install a nvidia driver on my system
System is debian sarge with new kernel 2.6.8.1, XEON proc, sata disks
and 1GB RAM.
The video card is a nvidia quadro PCI-E series card.
I downloaded the driver from nvidia,
Started it with:

No, I have no idea.
How could I, if you just tell us "it failed"?
Yours sincerely,

No.
Perhaps if you gave some more information it would be easier to help
you. That being said,
I just downloaded and tried to install the NVIDIA driver and it failed.
I had hit al-ctrl-F1 and went to INIT 3 any ideas?

You need to remove the directory that you made and install the kernel drivers
first. The Removing all old and conflicting files message is normal let it do
what it wants to. Just install the kernel drivers first and they should work
fine for you.

I recommend that you download the following:
ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/contrib/n/nvidia-glx-src/nvidia-glx-src_0.9.769-1_i386.deb
ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/contrib/n/nvidia-kernel-src/nvidia-kernel-src_0.9.769-1_i386.deb
Install these and follow the (rather terse) instructions
I have been trying to install the NVIDIA drivers for
my NVIDIA 32mb GeForce 2 card without much success. I
succeeded in downloading two tar files from the NVIDIA
web site under windows and then decompressing them
into my /usr/local directory. This created two new
directories /usr/local/NVIDIA_GLX-0
