I had the same issue installing both ‘surge’ and ‘woody’ on a Compaq:
Deskpro EN
256 meg RAM
onboard VGA
onboard Ethernet
Intel 766mhz PIII chip
Problem:
During install the screen would flicker on and off in half second intervals.
Resolution:
Run install with the framebuff
Thanks... you pointed me in the right direction. I did a search on google on how to disable the framebuffer and found the following suggestion:
You have to pass the video=vga16:off option when booting the kernel you choose. That is, after the welcome message of the installation program, type eit
