You might need to enable a kernel module or two when you compile your kernel.

I have a Debian 2.4.18 kernel in which I enabled HPFS support and

On boot the scanner attached to the scsi card is not recognized and I
can't mount one of my HPFS partitions.
If I boot Knoppix, I can scan and I can look at the HPFS partitions.
