Thanks for spotting of the error in the sources.list. It error message was
confusing me.
I did run apt-get dist-upgrade after apt-get update.
The process ground to a halt with a problem over dependency error over
'default-jre'
After googling the new error I had to run:
apt-get -o APT::Immediate
And what about
#apt-get dist-upgrade
or
#aptitude safe-upgrade
?

I thought this might be a transient issue but I tried the upgrade

I thought this might be a transient issue but I tried the upgrade yesterday
as well as again today.
Does anyone know what
my local Debian mirror, but I get this error
message:
Malformed release file
ftp://debian.paradise.net.nz:21/debian/dists/woody/Release
I don't think it's a problem with the mirror because I get the exact same
message trying with http.us.debian.org:
Malformed release file
http://http.us.
