Eventually this worked:
xrandr --addmode VGA-1 1280x800
xrandr --output VGA-1 --mode 1280x800 --same-as LVDS-1
I cannot the the entire screen on the CRT(VGA-1) monitor, but I will try
to configure the monitor to display as much as possible (or the left
side, at least).
