Did you happen to use the debian packages, or did you
try the ones from cups.org? I tried the .deb from
cups.org, although it seems you have to
Thanks to everyone who responded, both on and off list,
I've installed CUPS and everything is now A-KO
Thanks Again

G'day All,
I'm running Debian testing with kernel 2.4.4 and can not get my printer
( a HP deskjet 690C ) to work, I have the parport, partport_pc, and lp
loaded with the correct irq, ect settings. but any request to the printer
ejects a blank page, except the command 'lp foobar.txt' which prints
I am having a hard time getting lprng to work. I am pretty sure the
problem is in my /etc/lpd.perms file. With the default /etc/lpd.perms
file, things print just fine. However, I want to restrict who can use my
printer.
The configuration below pretends to do exactly what I want it to, but

try to remove the lpd package first use dpkg --purge, this will get rid
of the config file(ie. /etc/init.d/lpd), and you may remove the lprng package
as well and reinstall it to make sure your system is *clean*.
don't know why you had lpd in /usr/local/bin, you should not have anything
under /usr/

If you just install lprng package and have a working printcap file,
then it should be fine.

I didn't see an answer, but since this list is producing over 200 emails
a day, I might have missed it, but I searched the archives and didn't
see a reply. Can anyone suggest where else I might go to get an
answer?
I reinstalled my system from hamm a while back and am having trouble

I just gave up on apsfilter and used magicfilter instead. Everything
worked instantly. I'd submit a bug report for apsfilter but I still don't
have the foggiest idea what exactly was wrong.

I decided to set up my printer on my Linux box so I installed lprng
(3.2.1-1) and apsfilter (4.9.1-10) and installation seemed to go without a
hitch. But I can't print. Looking at the log in
/var/spool/lpd/bj200-letter-auto-color reveals entries like the following:
tail: -d/var/spool/lpd/bj200-l
