I don't know, if this will fix your problem, but you might try to use
chr
I am doing this from memory, so I stand to be
corrected. But...
You must chroot to the root directory that has the
problem and the /etc with lilo.conf.
Lilo does that with the -r option: so try
lilo -r /mnt/hda1

I pressed the ALT key to go
to boot from linux.old selection in the lilo
boot menu. Then went in and downloaded
a new kernel (for Athlon K7) and matching modules.
