I had this problem too and solved it like this: When booting (with lilo) I appended root=/dev/sda1 (my root device under 2.4 was hda1) and checked if the kernel was able to mount the root device. After successfully mounting the root device I booted up a Kernel 2.4 and changed the /etc/fstab from /
