Hi Mark,
Are you sure they are broken?
Can you tell us what you did to install KDE and what happened, possibly

I have Sarge installed and would like to install kde. However, the kde package
seems to be broken (as well as the gnome package).
These appear to be my options
1. Install from source. But then I loose the advantage of apt-get upgrade
2. Upgrade to testing - that kde package seems to be OK.

Yes, KDM is calling startkde which in turn calls kdeinit.

Sorry, Felix, could you explain what you mean my "my own session
manager"? You mean something other than gdm, kdm, xdm or wdm?

It depends entirely on which session manager is used or
On kubuntu (and SuSE, IIRC) if I have a ~/bin directory it gets included
in my $PATH but this doesn't happen under debian. (In all cases I'm
using kde with kdm as my window manager.)

.bash_profile is only sourced for login shells; when you open
I recently made the switch to XOrg from XFree86 when I updated my Debian testing
box, and since I prefer to log into a shell then use 'startx' to get into X, I
used 'update-rc.d' to get rid of xdm in init.d. Before I did this, though, I

KDE is in the Testing (Woody) and Unstable (Sid) branches. I wouldn't
use Potato on a desktop system anyway since it is so out of date.

debian. I'm using nano instead of pico, is there a similar program for
mail??
Thanx in advance,

Next I tried the RPMs of KDE this also failed with a heap of error.
So I downloaded the tarables of it and started compiling. So far have
not been able to get it
