Being really scared of how KDE 4 looks like I'm trying to be
proactive and started looking for alternatives.
After installing Xfce I can't start KDE, though. I don't use any
display manager, and this is what I get when invoking startkde:
xsetroot: unable to open display ''
xset: unable to ope

But now I remove Fluxbox and fluxconf
I'm not sure about this, but you might get around your problem by deleting
or renameing your ~/.kde and ~/.kderc. You will lose the settings for your
kde progs, though.

Last night, KDE crashed on me and ever since then, it won't load.
When I do startx -- -bpp 16, all I get is that checker/basket pattern
with the 'X' cursor and nothing loads. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1, this
gets repeated over and over until I press Ctrl+Z:

This is a bizarre problem. I have installed previous versions of KDE
error and hassle free and the other day I decided to grab KDE 1.0 from
Slink and the dpkg -i install went without errors and then I modified
/etc/X11/window-managers so that KDE would be the first to start and
