KDE Sound Problem

KDE doesn't initialize it's sound module when I start it up. I have sound configured in the kernel (2.4.0) using the Ensonic 1371 sound card settings. When I check the 'info' KDE isn't recognizing any sound card. I am able to get sound by executing gmixer. Anyone have any suggestions? thanks -
