Redhat uses a package called Kudzu. It keeps a database of installed
hardware and scans on boot for hardware changes. I find it quite helpful
when I forget what type of card is installed.

I don't think so, I've never used it myself. As a student, I rarely buy

Joris,
Thanks for the lead. It's always nice to have some hardware
detection. Does it build a database so that when new hardware is
installed, it opens a dialog for you to configure it during the boot
process?
The discover is a frontend for hardware detection tools, and you

Thanks. Good to know that the information in XF86Config reflects
actual monitor capability rather than impose a restriction on it.

While I was planning to recompile the kernel first and then install
the driver as you suggest, is that order

That's from XFree86 3.3.6, which is still needed for some cards that
aren't supported in 4.x. You almost certainly want xserver

Hi,
I installed Debian - Woody - stable on an x86 machine
and then installed the package XServer-Xfree86 and
walked through all the configuration steps. At the end
when I executed startx it couldn't find the command!
What else do I need to install?
Thanks,
Nimar
Hi all,
I don't know, why I can't install this package on my debian (basicly
potato and woody for kde2) and if it is a problem of my system or of the
package?! All of the necessary and up-to-date packages are installed. On
finally installing the xserver-xfree86 following error message appears:
Works. Thanks.

Hi,
As MAKEDEV reports an error in line 18 of /proc/devices:

the problem is very likely to be the space in the module's name. I don't
know if this is a bug in MAKEDEV or the Mitsumi
I am having trouble installing xservers. I am attempting to install the
mach 32 server and the vga 16 server. I have an up to date Debian 1.3
system from the stable directory.
Here are my messages:
