installing new fonts makes emacs unusable

I installed a bunch of fonts and now emacs (21) is unusable in X on my sid system. All characters show up as squares. I can't even be sure that is what caused the problem. I have removed most fonts I can find. Any ideas as to how to diagnose this would be appreciated. TIA, Paul Scott --
