OK - go to another console (alt-f2) and type dmesg | more
Then look for

Just so all of you know what the problem was...
I needed to have loopback device compiled into the kernel. That was the
problem. I had someone else recompile a new kernel for me with all the
right options so I could boot it on the installation cd. It's working
now. :)

/dev/sda1 is mount on /target
/dev/ram0 is mount on /
/dev/hda is mounted on /instmnt
That's it.
does this help?

Yes,.. I can. the drive is accessible.
I am getting this error when it dies:
/dev/loop0: Operation not supported by device
/dev/loop0: Operation not supported by device
Then, it dies.

Yep.. I double checked all the jumpers and the cables to make sure
e
I managed to catch one last part of the error message before it restarts.
It says:
/dev/loop0: Operation not supported by device
/dev/loop0: Operation not supported by device
Does this change anything?

The cdrom is IDE

Amanda,
Don't you want /dev/sda if it's the first SCSI drive?

I'm trying to install Debian 2.0.
I am at the point where it says to "Install operating system kernel and
modules."
It asks you what medium will be used to install the system. I choose
cd-rom on /dev/hda. It is just a normal Atapi drive.
It asks for the directory where the Debian archive resides.
