I believe there can be lots of causes for this.
In my case, this happened when I tried putting in memory that wasn't
compatible with my computer.
This problem also showed up when I tried to compile a kernel, as the
compile would fail, usually with all sorts of pager request problems, etc.

normally let my computer get on with booting whilst I make a cup of tea, etc.
It seems to occur as soon as X starts - the cursor is frozen as so
