it works in some cases, but not all cases. The officially recommended
solution: tell gpm to export repeat_type=ms3, and tell X to us

however I have not been able to get the scrolling ball to work.

scolling mouse howto on my machine and online, but I haven't found

My thanks to several of you who responded to my post. You all corrected
my mistake of thinking I could not specify the (preferred) /dev/ttySx in
both gpm and the X-server.
After correcting the config and rebooting I'm able to start and restart
X without killing gpm.
