When I try to start a gnome session after I login the speakers hum and the command lines, top and bottom, flash on and off several times then the sound stops and the command lines disappear. Only the computer, home and drive icons remain. I can restart gdm and chose the icewm session which starts

More news- I replaced the line "Exec=firestarter" with "Exec=sudo firestarter." Now when I start up, firestarter is open, but somehow the Gnome splash screen stays on until I click it. I don't know if it is the .desktop file that is opening firestarter, or Gnome's attempt to preserve the previous
