Try ps|wc -l and ps -e|wc -l to see if there are too many processes.

ulimit -Su
say? Also have a look in: /etc/security/limits.conf

I got 1Gig ram and 2.5 Gig swap, I often get an error stating something
like fork: resource temporarily unavailable.
What is causing that?
