Yes, I installed it myself. Since when I was fighting to set up my
audio, at a point I red that I need a sound server. So I installed it
and the sound was working on my linux box.

Hi,
I stopped pulseaudio.
BTW: This did not work "/etc/init.d/pulseaudio stop"
I had to use 'kill'.
And 'espeaks' works!
Could you see my other thread - problem with my
other computer's sound system.

Probably depends on your definition of "significantly". But no, I

Is this ok? ^
Just a thought. It looks a bit odd to me (in my very limited
experience).

I want to know what's happening. Lazy umount is, to me, distateful
except when using network services like nfs.

Hi,
The standard trick, of course, is to run lsof and grep it's output.
But that didn't help. Googling found reference to fuser, but that
didn't help either.
Any other ideas?

Hello,
when shutting down my etch system, I get a
umount /var: Device busy
Failed
During the next reboot the /var partition is checked, but there is never an
inconsistency found, looks like the partition is at least synced during
shutdown.
The only uncommon thing at this system, I remember
scanimage -p --batch-count 5 --bath-prompt (y some other options)
it works fine with the firts scanned page, but after press RETURN for
the second page to be scanned, scanimage says:
scanimage: sane_start: Device busy
and then the scanner is switched off and scanimage ends without scan

Hej all,
I have a little trouble on my laptop with the application totem:
Whenever I try to open an audio file with totem (mp3, wav, wma) it gives me
'An error occured. The audio device is busy. Is another application
using it?'.
Other applications (rhythmbox) play without any trouble...

That's the OSS driver. Are you using hotplug? If so, add "emu10k1" to
/etc/hotplug/blacklist to keep it from being loaded befor
ALSA is unable to load and gives the error
"EMU10K1/Audigy soundcard not found or device busy".
ALSA knows to load the emu10k1 module; I can see it in `lsmod`. Here's
a snippit from my dmesg:

Hey, guys,
Often, when I want to umount a filesystem (especially the CD-Rom), it says
"Device Busy". So, I have to check all my xterms, apps, consoles... to see
which of them is using my device.
Trying a fuser /dev/cdrom usually reports nothing.
So, is there a way to umount it even if
