A few weeks ago after my usual monthly update/upgrade, xset +dpms
stopped working. Using dpms works as expected initially, but Xorg hangs
after about 15min in to power save state. Everything else except the
monitor works. I can ssh and reboot. Since then I have been disabling dpms.

i use the current debian stable branch.
With the command
XAUTHORITY=/home/user/.Xauthority xset -display :0 dpms force off
i can switch off the monitor. So it is black.
With the command

Now I know I can use xset or put it as an Option in the Monitor section of
xorg.conf, which as I'm running the nvidia driver I now have

Hello there,
has anyone experienced a seemingly weird behaviour with xscreensaver
and the DPMS functions X provides?
Well, I had configured xscreensaver to blank/lock the screen, then turn
the backlight off (it's an LCD). It was working, but operates rather
peculiarly lately:
It goes like

it with
xset +dpms dpms 300 600 900
it somehow gets turned off some while later. How do I get the setting to stick?
Running "xset dpms off" will put the monitor into the off state.

A read of 'man setterm' and
'man xset' is a good start. Generally though, I've had no problems, and it
might well be that your monitor needs to be set for DPMS support via its
OSD.
Aha! It does indeed work as intended in console if I put it in VESA
powerdown mode. So it must b

and not cancel the screen suspension. The screen can
be turned off with 'xset dpms force off' but as I said it turns back on
when APM activates, whether automatically or manually using 'apm -s' or
'apm -S'.

No, I am not sure it is dpms that is causing the problem, but I will see
what is the effect of the -dpms option. I did not see that
option documented.

OK, so if I make a file /etc/rc0.d/S88dpmsoff
with
#! /bin/sh
/usr/X11R6/bin/xset dpms force off
would that make sense...?
But then, come to thnk of it,
