Comparing the stock config-2.4.18-k6 to a 2.4.17 kernel where I had removed
initrd, look for these:
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD is not set
CONFIG_IDE=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDISK=y

Obviously new at this custom kernel stuff. Currently using the default
