I created a file called "audio" in /etc/modutils, with the single
line "alias sound-slot-0 es1370". No luck, as you predicted.
I then extracted a kernel image for my kernel to a separate
directory, rmmod'ed sound, soundlow, soundcore, and es1370 (not in
that order), copied over fresh versions
Briefly, sound-slot-0 is the kernels "generic" name for a sound card module.
