Err - you _are_ downloading it as a binary (and not a text) file?
(If in doubt, press Shift as you select file to download).
Just an idle thought.

I followed the instructions from the previous mail and got the following result:
gzip: stdin: unexpected en of file
tar: unexpected EOF on archive file
tar: child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
I have also tried to install Communicator 4.0 to see if that works, it
OK, I downloaded the Communicator 4.5 file, again. I am using hamm. I ran
dselect and the Netscape installation program. The file was in /tmp. I got
the same error message as below. I then tried using, dpkg -i
netscape-unpacked.9955/
I got the following readout:
dpkg-split: error reading nets

Kent,
Here's what worked for me (I recently upgraded to slink; this
may not all be available otherwise... AFAIK):
I used apt-get to install the following:
netscape-base-45
netscape-java-45
communicator-base-45
communicator-smotif-45
OK, I think I came fairly close this time:) I copied the file to /tmp
ran dselect (the netscape set up program) here is where it ended:
Setting up netscape 4 (4.0-12)
-Found ' /tmp/communicatortar.gz'...(valid)
-Extracting from /tmp/communicatortar.gz

I had a weird experience when installing Netscape 4.5 using
'Hamm', in that I had to rename the netscape file that I
downloaded before the install program would recognise it.
When dselect trys to configure the netscape package it
complained that it could not find the right file and gave a

You are using the mv command correctly. (You should also be able to
use cp). So that is not the problem.
The most likely cause is that you are typing in the filename
incorrectly. It is easy to mix up - or . with _. Also, the file
name might have a space at the end.
Try using "mv /root/comm* /
OK, I ran dselect and ran the Netscape set up program and the program tells me

order to work it needs the Communicator file to be in the tmp directory. While

Ok. The installer from Debian site will look for the communicator file to
be located in /tmp
So, what you do is this:
download Netscape commmunicator from Netscape site, and put it into /tmp
with " mv communicator* /tmp"
or whatever the name is.
Then run dselect and install the netscape4.04 ( or wh

Hi, I'm trying to install Communicator 4.5 and can't get anywhere. I
downloaded the file with Lynx from the netscape ftp site. The file was
saved in /root/communicator-v45-export.x86-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz
I'm thinking the file shouldn't be in /root when I try to install it,
maybe it doesn't mat
