It's been going on for a while. My client switched to CIFS version 3 for
these shares, and it seemed to be a bigger issue after that. Googling
around I see some suggestions that issues like this may be fixed in the
Linux 5 kernel, I guess I could use Debian backports and try it out.

But when trying to write a file to a CIFS mount, I occasionally see errors
like:
