Thanks! That did the trick.
In /etc/gdm/gdm.conf, under [server-Standard], I changed the
command-line into: "command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X -audit 0 -dpi 100" (i.e.
added "-dpi 100"), and it now works just like I wanted it to!
