This line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf did the job for me:
options snd-usb-audio index=-2
I stumbled over it because I had to do the same in order to make sound
on my Mac Mini work. This doesn't render the device unusable AFAICS, so

I have installed kino and I want with it to edit some
screen recording videos.
The screen recording I have done on win 32 with free software,
like krut, camstudio, icord, taksi. These screen recording tools
can to save video files in avi & mov formats.

So far every program I tries crashed somewhen in between or was too low level
to be used with fun (mencode/transcode).
