I have a 82801CA/CAM AC'97, and don't have any problems with sound
(2.4.24 or 2.6.2).
Did you try with the Alsa drivers for XMMS (not OSS)?
If you have to use OSS, are you sure your OSS modules are loading?
For me:

I only got my Intel 82801EB AC'97 working when I started using the
2.6.1 kernel.
