I havn't tried exact that combination but it should work. Just use
"make oldconfig"

Hello,
I have just upgraded to Kernel 2.2.7 and compiled sound support as a
module.
When I try to play a sound file, I get sth like
splay: Failed to open sound device.
/dev/dsp[1] and /dev/audio[1] exsist. The logfile shows:
