2.1.XX kernel compile still not going well---ppp

For well over a year, I have experienced some kind of problem compiling the 2.1.X kernels. The kernel boots well, but ppp support isn't working properly. I've been around and aruond with the lists on this. This has happened on two different machines, through libc5 and libc6 libraries. Both mod
