I've found when using [gkx]dm, .xsession is ignored. When using
startx, .xinitrc is ignored. Others have reported exactly the
opposite.

This is a fresh install.
If I create a .xinitrc in my home directory and put a window manager in
it, X starts fine. However, without the .xinitrc X won't start. On all
other systems I've installed, X starts without a user

I think that I have that stuff in .xinitrc and then I have
.xsession containing the command: eval .xinitrc
Also, .xsession should be chmod +x
