Why not either, open an xterm and type `wget ', then:
1) Right click on the link, select `Copy Link Location

I use wget too. But my solution is right-click and -> "Copy Link Loc
Webdownloader works reasonable well, though i have the occasional site it fails
with.
And it has clipboard monitoring added recently as well though i find upon start
i
have to add the first link manually before it starts grabbing urls from the clip
board.

.gz, but it always seems to save to the drive with the .gz attached

Holding Shift when you left-click on the file forces a raw binary
download of the file.
