Don't think so. In fact, these files will be moved also when their
owning packages are upgraded, so the directory /usr/X11R6/lib will
eventually be deleted.

In the xorg update there was an advice to save the files in /usr/X11R6
so the bin directory could be replaced with a softlink to /usr/bin.
Once this had been done the programs that were in usr/X11R6/bin could be
moved to /usr/bin and the other files & directories could be moved back
to /usr/X

apt-get install xlibs-dev
for example. Try it first and the maybe
you need othe Devel-Packages as well.

When running ./configure before installing ksubeditor, I get this errormessage:

check your installation and add the correct paths!
I googled around and found that the folder /usr/X11R6/include may be

Hi,
I have set up Debian 3.0 rev0 and apt'd Gnome 2 onto it. It has set
everything up, but when gdm tries to run it complains. I have tried a
manual "startx", but then I get an error message:
xinit: no server "X" in path
and instructs me to make sure /usr/X11R6/b

I don't understand the difference between these 2 directories.
Thinking logicaly, I could say that /usr/X11R6/bin is for the
executables that need X and /usr/bin is for the others executables running
under the console.
But there are a lot of X programs under /usr/bin :
ex. :

I had the same problem. It was solved by downgrading from
qt1g_1.42-2.deb to
qt1g_1.42-1.deb
Markus.
I get this error when trying to execute certain KDE programs from an
xterm in KDE.
/usr/X11R6/lib/libkfile.so.2: undefined symbol: __pure_virtual
When I execute these programs from the KDE menus, nothing happens at
all.
I'm running KDE 1.1-19990207-2 on my slink system.

What are the possible explanations that I have 2 copies of the same directory ?

number of sound utilities in order to play around and see what
the various packages did and which ones might be of interest to me. Now
when I boot, I get a process named /usr/X11R6/bin/au running all the time.
This is a slink to auvoxware. This ties up the sound devices in /dev so

Can't do that Bill, they've got to point to somewhere! Strange how
my tunnel vision works -- there are symlinks there, where are the libraries?

When it rains, it pours! :-)
Does anyone know what package contains the various libraries found
in /usr/X11R6/lib/i486-linuxaout? I'm missing these files for some
reason and many packages want them! Right now, all I have are some
bad symlinks in that subdir. A grep of /var/lib/dpkg
If you have your XF86Config set up ok, please check /etc/X11/Xserver. Read
the comments in that file and replace XF86_NONE with your correct X server.
For example I use XF86_SVGA since I have a Matrox card.
The correct location of XF86Config is /etc/X11/XF86Config. Any other

What is wrong wih my debian configuration since I get the error:

when I try startx?
XF86Setup works well but wants to write to /etc/X11/XF86Config
and copying (not moving) the XF86Config from /etc to /usr/X11R6/bin/
doesn't help.

In Debian Linux, do files in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/ get read

The Debian FAQ says:
Debian's X11 installation expects you to leave the files in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/ unchanged. If you want to customise
