Check that you have the correct version of initscripts. My version is
2.86-5. mountvirtfs in /etc/init.d should have mounted /sys at bootup.
Make sure you are actually running 2.6 (uname -r)

My server is a Debian Sarge-box (dist-upgraded from Woody a few months
