I tried all sorts of things, but the only thing that worked was to
change the ATZ line to this:

I changed the line that causes the dialout to occur to include M0.
The line previously read "ATDT865", it now reads "ATM0DT865".

Problem fixed---I had first run pppconfig and later
tried to edit /etc/chatscripts/provider and
/etc/ppp/peers/provider files not realizing that pppconfig
had already taken care of those files. My 'editing'
messed up things.
I cleaned out the two files plus pppconfig and starte

If you use Windowmaker, you can use wmppp which monitors if your
connected, the connection speed, etc. It probably works fine with
other window managers, but they tend to have their own, more native

If I recall the AT command set might also have a volume control. ATVn

When I dial up to the net the modem connects but the
volume is so loud that I have to turn the speaker
down, but then I have to turn it up to hear any mp3's
etc..or get blasted out. As root I added atm0=off
above the line OK-AT-OK ATDT and that turns
off the speaker, but then it is hard to tell w
