There are some compatability issues between different NIC, hubs &
switches. You'd do well to check with you switch manufacturer which NICs
they recommend. I'll not name names, since I'd only be repeating info from
magazine articles rather than 1st-hand experience.

I always set version info on all modules, which allows you to use old or
non-kernel modules with a new kernel. As a bit of housekeeping I also
rename the Debian modules dir before I "make modules modules_install".
Don't forget to clean out /etc/modules to stop the system trying to load
non-existant
Try Webmin instead - it's usually pretty accurate, it does authentication,
and understands many different systems (Debian, RedHat, SuSE, FreeBSD, AIX
etc, etc, etc), so if you like to tinker with several different Linux/Unix
boxen you get a consistent interface across them all.
I tried LinuxConf a
AFAIK 24bpp is also referred to as "packed pixel" - 32 & 24bpp give the
same amount of colours (16.7 million)but with 24bpp the colour info is
compressed. Some hardware can't handle the 24bpp and must use 32bpp.

have you defined a global http proxy (squid or wwwoffle, for instance) - I
have had some funnies with this. Check the result of "export".

I've been though this with a Vanta. The Nvidia source is for 3.3.5 I
believe, otherwise you have the binaries (with stringent license). The
binary driver is unstable & liable to crash & burn with slight provocation
eg. ctrl-alt-Fx to a text console, or simply dying on startup.

If the other pcs are networked simply mount the cd on one and use an ftp
or nfs link.

although not new to linux. A little bit of skewed logic in places - I

many kernel hand-rollers would do menuconfig & so this would be a popular

Most likely the kernel is not aware of the ATA100 interface yet. If you
can, slot in a multi-I/O card with IDE i/f & use this to install. You'll
have to seek out a kernel patch for the ATA100 controller. The reported
"Promise" controller is the ATA100 chipset being detected but not
recognized.

I'll second the anti-Nvidia driver lobby. I too have had severe lockups
either starting XF86 4.0 or ctl-alt-Fx'ing to a text console. My specific
hardware is a 16Mb Sparkle Nvidia Vanta AGP 2x card, this on my main SuSE
(sorry!) box.
