Just my 2 cents,
Starting firefox from a terminal (xterm, gnome-terminal, etc) should
be a good idea, since some error messages can be displayed there,
pointing the root of failure.
Have you done this already?

I had "removed safely" the device,
in kde, I had no more device file - or better, just the main one
(/dev/sdf), and both file and fsck.vfat complained that the file was not
available (I don't know what the exact wording was). And so I could not
even run fsck (fsck.vfat, in my case).

Probably. I think KDE even says, for usb sticks, that it "could not
eject the device". But would this make udev/hal remove the device file
along with the mount-point?

Yes, I will read it again. But I have to say that I find the gnus manual
really confusing, perhaps because I do not have a news background, and I
fail to understand several of the underlying concepts.

broken than sid. It's the way it works. testing is less unstable than
sid: it means testing changes less than sid, it's all.

Yes, it's surprising and frustrating. I think the way to go is the
python module cited in another message in this thread. You could make a
standalone converter and call it in your bash script.
