1. Without going into details of how I did it, I fouled up lpd or lpr.
When I try to print something, I get:
Connection refused
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon
How do I correct whatever is wrong? I tried magicfilterconfig and it did
not help.

I changed the permissions and got new troubles. The soa and sop files
started, but told me that I did not have enough disk memory, when I am
reasonably sure that I do. The first so file told me that I needed the
directory on the last so file. When I tried it, I was told that a bin
file couldn't
I have downloaded all the files for Star Office 6, but haven't the
slightest idea of how to install them. The guide describes a method that
relates to the CD version. All the files are of the form *.bin. Does
anybody know what to do next?
I followed up on my reported guess that my hard disk was full by
removing files. My xdm is now working.

After your last message, I ran dpkg -l and found that gs had not been
installed when I thought it was. I reran the installation. Both Star
Office and Netscape are now printing.

Looks like you don't have ghostscript installed (or at least installed
correctly). gs's role is to take postscript output (which SO and Netscape
generate) and translate it into your printer's native format. Try:
apt-get install gs-aladdin
and see if that works.

/var/log/lpr.log?
Have you tried using magicfilter to handle printing?
(I haven't used Opera, but Netscape and SO both print fine for me.
