the DVDROM seems to be: /dev/hdb
and no matter what DVD or CD i put in, it can read it.
This is probably as silly question but I've got to ask, are you using
mount to mount the disk after it's inserted?

Look at the time/date stamp for your most resent image file in /boot.
ls -l /boot mine is dated the date I did my last upgrade to Lenny.
