The sound now works, but I did have to reboot the computer (there might have
been some other way to do it, but modprobe was not enough) as well as use the
second firmware location (without the /usr/local/ prefix in the directions).

I have followed the instructions (last updated January 2013) at
wiki.debian.org/echoaudio very closely with my 8.3.0 installation; after
entering modprobe snd-echo3g I received the following message:
