Migrating XFree86 to Xorg

2006-10-04 Thread dbarker
I have a problem with my laptop, but it's not really laptop specific. For two years I happily used it in class with an external projector. This summer after a variety of upgrades (don't ask) I have problems. I can currently say that debian testing/Xorg using an Xorg config found on the web speci

USB DVD burners

2005-12-08 Thread dbarker
Maybe I forgot to hit send yesterday I was wondering what experience - good or bad - people had had with USB DVD burners. In principal they should be easy, but in reality? Any info much appreciated. -- |Deryk Barker, Computer Science Dept. | Music does not have to be understood| |Camosun Co

USB DVD/CD burners

2005-12-07 Thread dbarker
I'm contemplating adding a USB DVD burner to my system. Does anyone have any good or bad experiences with these? In theory it should be simple, but I thought I'd check on the practice first...:-) -- |Deryk Barker, Computer Science Dept. | Music does not have to be understood| |Camosun College, V

Getting htdig to work with apache2

2004-11-12 Thread dbarker
I've been reading the article on setting up an htdig index on NewsForge. Everything seems to work just fine until I try and run the search form. The page comes up but whenever I click on the search button I get a download dialog because the htsearch is a "BIN file." I've been tearing my hair out

Kernel rebuild problems

Building 2.6.x kernel

2004-07-22 Thread dbarker
Maybe my last message went astray. Has anyone had any success using a 2.6.[67] kernel built themselves? I have now built a 2.6.6 and a 2.6.7 using make_kpkg. Both have apparently installed OK but panicked because they couldn't mount my root partition. Said partition is an ext3 created during a s

wireless and kernel woes

2004-07-19 Thread dbarker
The situation: bought an Averatec notebook couple of weeks ago (AMD Athlon-M, 256K, builtint 10/100 and wireless, CDRW-DVD combo, etc) Installed sarge using the latest beta of the installer. A few hiccups (particularly with X not being configured properly and KDE not installed at all) but everyth

New sarge installer casues problems on laptops

2004-04-19 Thread dbarker
I just installed sarge using the new installer last week. There is a problem: for some reason the startup scripts are in the wrong sequence, so that the system attempts to configure the network before the PCMCIA card manager, so that eth0 isn't found. I can more or less get around this by manual
