hi,
try 'aptitude install kernel-headers-x.xx.xx'
but if you use your custom recompiled kernel it wouldn't work fine.

i had watched chroot debian's /etc/gdm/gdm.conf file, but cant found the vt7 and so on.
i changed 'irstVT=7' to 'FirstVT=9' but it doesn't work.

i think the freshest disto is that made by jigdo.
just download the jigdo file from http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/ which regenerated

my server is just DELL PE1750 with dual Xeon 2.8
i'm very interest about that.
i installed debian 3.0r2 into PE1750 with many difficulties.finally with a 2.4.25-dell
kernel i 'd finished it.
the main problem is the drivers for MegaRAID (DELL PERC 4/Di) isn't builded into
standard 2.4.2
thank you !
i will try it.
it's a new idea for me.

sometimes disk which can't be recognized by BIOS correctly can be init by OS.
my 120GB disk boot windows2000 correctly which can't by recognized by BIOS,but can be
used by OS.
so i think you can try in the way.
good luck.

I'm compiling kernel-source-2.4.25.
I saw that it's different packages kernel-image-2.4.25-1 and kernel-image-2.4.25-1-smp
in the result of command 'apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.25' .
I think that the original source package of kernel-2.4.25 must be the same, but i don't
