OK, thanks to those who said i needed to install
xserver-xfree86. :) i took the plunge into dselect, discovered the "/"
key to search for packages, and now i think it's installed OK. And i
know more than i did before about apt-get & dselect & Debian package
installation management. Bu

except that i called the file XF86Config and wrote it to /etc/X11/
