problem compiling new kernel

Hi to Everyone, With my old SARGE system, as stated here last week, I was unable to boot newly compiled kernels, most likely because of the faulty initrd.img that I got using 'mkinitrd'. For this reason, I decided to install Lenny. Now, with Lenny, I haven't so far been able to go any further in

I feel sorry that I installed Lenny in a somewhat automated install program. During previous installs of earlier distros, I was being asked if I wanted to configure a printer and what kind, etc... There were no such questions here, and my printer is not operating. This is an old parallel port print

The default install of 'Evolution' activates spell checking. Since I have chosen a French config, the dictionary that I have is a French one. So, whenever I type in English, every word gets underlined in red waves so as to point out that the words do not belong to the currently installed dictionary
