What is policy on software updates to the 'stable' tree? Software there
is somewhat 'stale' and has unacceptable security risks such as Smail
lacking the anti-relay features, bind still being v4.9.6, etc. Should I
just not run 'stable' ? (This might mean I shouldn't run Debian at all,

got some bugfixes and things over 4.9.x that make the
upgrade well worthwhile... I mailed the maintainer of
the bind package a few days ago but have no response yet.

my machines... so I went and did a make config, then did
'make zImage' and got:

be nice to *just* be able to plug in a monitor and see what's going on
and not have to plug in a kbd just to be able to hit a key...

is an Adaptec 1522, kind of old and crufty and with no BIOS of its own.

Someone gave me a spare 2.3GB drive to use, but it's got 534byte sectors...
which wreaks all sorts of mayhem: neither linux or DOS fdisk will touch it.

to reformat it to 512 bytes/sector, etc... any ideas?

lyx, for instance, was originally lyx_pre-10.3_1.deb or somesuch

I have a single machine on the net (zachs.place.org)
with ip aliases to make it also be (eth0:0) juggling.place.org
and (eth0:1) www.worldwind.com. Which all works fine.
Except... that anywhere I telnet to from that machine
sees me as coming from www.worldwind.com instead of from
zachs.place.org
I can't seem to log in through xdm into my newly upgraded from .93 to 1.1
system. I log in, the screen freaks out as it swaps video modes to
the correct one that I'm running (or is it restarting the X server?
whatever) and then... it comes back to the xdm prompt. I can log in
fine if I do a ctrl
I just upgraded my 0.93 laptop to 1.1, and now traceroute
doesn't work... traceroute to anyplace returns
traceroute: IP_HDRINCL:Protocol not available
any ideas anyone?

In someone's 0.93-to-1.1 upgrade docco, they mention
dpkg-1.1.5aout.deb... I can't seem to find this, but
it's said to be necessary to upgrade... I've currently
got a .93 aout system with dpkg-1.0.17... but
now I'd like to upgrade, so...
help!
