On next console-data upgrade, the debconf-based stuff will be used.
New console-tools depending on new console-data this should work fine.

That's a know limitation, isn't it ? ;)

Oops... please ignore my previous request for help - it does not
contain enough information - the given example code works - I finally
found the real-code error (but maybe a (La)TeX as well, we'll see).

Good thing to know. Thanks.

I had not, and it works.
$TRANSLATION = '\$1;\$2';
$str = "ab";
eval "\$str =~ s{(.)(.)}{$TRANSLATION}";
Thanks to Joost and Qrczak for their help !

for this.
It seems a similar phenomenon occurs in the left-part of s///: a
variable contaning eg. "$1" will have problems as well, though in this
case "\1" will work:
$DUMMY = '$1';
$str = "aba";
$str =~ s{(.)(.)($DUMMY)}{$1;$2};
print $str . "\
for standard
LaTeX doc-classes, and seems to me more portable than any "a4" package
that may be around.

this respect.
You may want to have a look at console-tools, at sunsite in
linux/system/keyboards/, to get better command-line support for
unicode.
I wrote a little primer about unicode, which is included in
console-tools.

Is there such a mechanism, or is there only this stuff (what's its

It was one of the systems I had planned to package when I joined
Debian at first, but I never found enough time to start it.
In case anybody wants to take a look at it, primary site was

same ;)
